Do not read this review if you haven't read the first two yet. If you're reading this to see if it's worth getting into the series, the short answer is yaaasssssssssss. This series and book so far aren't all roses though. The characters largely have little personality and the author continuously beats you over the head with the fact that the Sa'Ba Taalor follow their gods unquestioningly and without hesitation. Overall, still very good and haven't had this much flat-out fun with a series in a while.

So you have your regular everyday humans, and then you have the gray-skinned, glowing-eyed, multiple-mouth-having, Sa'Ba Taalor. In the first book you're largely dealing with the mystery of what the Sa'Ba Taalor want. By this point it's very clear what they want, and it isn't peace and harmony. The only thing with that is, and I don't know what this says about myself, I'm not so sure they so easily labeled the bad guys. The people who murder women and children who have surrendered, will not stop until they destroy all of the humans and their cities, and show zero mercy. And still, if you had an (what you believed to be) infallible god speaking to you and giving you direct and specific orders, would you not follow them believing that in the end you would see why they were right to want what they ask for? I mean even as someone who doesn't believe in a god or gods, I can say, if an infallible god was speaking to me (and I wasn't insane) as they were the Sa'Ba Taalor, I'd trust in their own wisdom and judgement over my own.

That's, to me, what makes this story so interesting. On one hand you despise these gray folk for what they're doing. On the other, I cant help but wonder, do the gods know more than both "races" and actually have a good reason for all the evil they're bringing about? There's still one book left so the jury is still out on that, though as it gets deeper and deeper in, it's seeming less and less likely that there's anything positive that could come of it all.

City of Wonders Seven Forges Book III eBook James A Moore Reviews

A great second installment after the seven forges. I can’t wait to read the next one. The characters are well built and the story really pulls you in to the point where you’re suffering, rejoicing, and struggling right along with the main characters. I strongly recommend this novel to all fans of fantasy.
The Seven Forge Series is an interesting read. The characters and concepts are wonderfully built. It is a hard book to put down once you have starting...I am looking forward to more books in the series.....
The story was good with interesting concepts and plot twists. The author did tend to drone on about some points and brought them up repeatedly with long descriptions that were unnecessary and at points became tedious. But overall the story was very good. It should be noted that the book is part of a series and needs to be read in order with the rest of the series to make the most sense.
I really did enjoy the book the pace is good and the characters are realistic but I have some issues with some of its features. On all off the first three books the battle is one sided the Sa'ba Taalor will easily defeat the Empire, while it did make sense for the first two books, by the third book the Empire had time to organize them self but still it doesn't have any impact. Battles are finished as soon as they start, with Sa'ba Taalor barely making a sweat while attacking great fortress that the Empire had time to prepare.
Absolutly no siege equipment from the Empire (scorpions/trebuchet/catapults), traps (spikes/oil/etc), they spent there time preparing with what? For me this is unrealistic and it spoils the fun of the first two books
Finally, with book three, the Seven Forges series gets some decent editing. After the glaring errors in the first two books I would have been ready to put the series down had I not already bought the entire series. If you've made it through the first two books it's definitely worth continuing with this one. This book eliminates the editing errors that distracted from the story in the first two. There are some transitions between scenes that could have used a bit more polish, almost suggesting that portions were cut out of the story for one reason or another, but nothing important seems to be missing.
I've been really enjoying this series, though not reading one after the other, and with such a large cast of characters, I have to hand it to Moore for subtly reminding readers who each of the dozens of main characters are as each book starts. #3 picks up immediately after the apocalyptic events of the previous installment, with the empire frantically fortifying and preparing to defend Canhoon, the City of Wonders, from imminent invasion by what is turning into a massive onslaught of invaders. The Sa'ba Taalor are brutal warriors with no sense of mercy - only the desire to serve their "gods". The mystery of these gods of the Forges only deepens as this novel moves on, as does the revelations of other forces at work, sometimes against them.

The Sa'ba Taalor have been, until the end of the second novel, almost "good guys." Moore has spent much time covering their mysterious past, their beliefs, and in this third installment, you try not to like the characters as much because they spend the entire book slaughtering everyone, children included, but its hard to not at least relate to them as we've spent many pages in their heads. The author's approach to them does not change, treating their wants and needs (as simple as they are most of the time) as fairly as the protagonists in this story.

Regardless, minions of Mordor have nothing on these folks.

City of Wonders spends most of its time building up the dire threat the Taalor pose to, well, everyone. There are minor victories against them, but most are short-lived. In some ways, #3 is the Seven Forges version of The Empire Strikes Back. The bad guys keep winning. With an optimistic ending which hints at least that the Fellien empire might at least have a shot at defending themselves, and a few surprise twists, I'm looking forward to what I assume is the awesome conclusion to this series.
