The Glass Key Crime Masterworks Dashiell Hammett 9780752851334 Books

This is an unusual Dashiell Hammett noir mystery story because it is about crooked machine politics and instead of a detective the main character who solves the murder is a “fixer” for a political boss. I am a fan of Hammett’s work. It amazes me how the characters and locales of his stories are so varied. The Glass Key is as good as any of his novels in my opinion.

The Glass Key Crime Masterworks Dashiell Hammett 9780752851334 Books Reviews

As always his books are fun to read
Noir, noir, noir. It can be hard to decide who the "hero" is for quite a while, but once you get into the rhythm of the book, the tough and vivid descriptions really take hold of you. What a seedy and conniving world this book presents. Politics and murder... or is it murder?
Hammett introduces a new character, Ned Beaumont as the detective, though in fact that is not his profession. The story takes a lot of turns but always stays with the main theme and as usual the final denouement is a surprise.
Interesting novel. First one I've read in this type of genre. It was kind of hard to follow at first but after a few chapters, I got used to all of the characters and the way in which the book is written. It's a murder novel and there is some violence. Suspense kept me reading as I was eager to find out who seemed to know everything about everyone and threatened to blackmail them with mysterious 3 sentence letters. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes thrillers and doesn't mind a little violence.
I thought that it was fun, but I suspect that younger readers not familiar with the detective stories of that genre will not be impressed. The final resolution was out of left field and there were very few clues that would lead the reader to know 'who done it.'
Dashiell Hammett, the legendary writer who singlehandedly made hardboiled crime respectable subject matter for American novelists, pulled no punches when he authored The Glass Key. The pages of this dark, decidedly non-uplifting book are teeming with violent acts and political corruption while vividly showcasing the basest of human instincts. The characters are largely unlikable. And that includes the novel's protagonist, Ned Beaumont. Perhaps especially Ned Beaumont. Ned is a professional gambler and the righthand man to a powerful political boss in the unnamed city in which most of the narrative of The Glass Key unfolds.

The unsolved murder of a Senator's son provides the backdrop against which the numerous examples of depravity and hard edged action take place. Hammett unflinchingly tells this brutal tale using crisp, uncomplicated language that flows smoothly. The Glass Key is an ugly story, beautifully written. Highly recommended.
A wonderful suspenseful read by Dashiell Hammett, The Glass Key will not disappoint. The Glass Key is a fantastic tale of loyalty, politics, and power. Ward boss Paul Madvig wants to marry into a pure bread political family, the Taylors. When the son of the Taylor's is found dead all fingers point toward Madvig. Madvig's close friend and confidant Ned Beaumont is loyal but still doubts his friend's innocence. Beaumont goes on an investigation of sorts in order to find the real killer. Even if it is Madvig...
The Glass Key is a great read. It even became the basis for the Coen Brother's classic Miller's Crossing. It is a noir style pulp fiction. If you have never read Hammett before, this is a good place to start, the prose is very clean yet descriptive and will have you constantly turning pages.
This is an unusual Dashiell Hammett noir mystery story because it is about crooked machine politics and instead of a detective the main character who solves the murder is a “fixer” for a political boss.
