I have Not read this book as of yet but I sure plan to soon. I just recently, yesterday while watching Josey Wales again, have learned that the movie is actually based on the true tale of "Bushwhacker" Bill Wilson. When I learned that, I went OMG!! My grandfathers, grandmothers, great uncles and great aunts, aunts and uncles, and my Mom and Dad all used to tell me about Bill Wilson the Bushwhacker. My Grandfathers used to tell us kids that we are related to a very famous Confederate Bushwhacker and, asvwe get older, will learn about him, whom he was, and why hedid what he did. The Last things we were told about our Bushwhacker heroic relative when we were older yet still kids, was that 1. His home was burned to the ground because he was found to be innocent of Yankee horse theft or something. Some if the Kansas Redlegs and Jayhawkers didnt like him being found not guilty, so those guys rounded up tpogether to "make Billy pay" for it. It was after this that Biil's house was burned down. All I can say is those Yanks better think their lucky stars they didn't harm Billy's family!! All of my relatives say that even today.
Now in relation to this story and now learning whom it was that we are related to via all the stories is this fact My Dad's side of the family told me many years ago that my Dad, Billy Wright, was named after this great heroic relative of ours. And this all makes sense to me. We are All from the Southern states Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee, Missouri, Oklahoma, Virginia, Kentucky....I have relatives in every Southern state there is. And relatives in Texas and California, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana, and other Western and Midwestern states as well.
Anyway, as I was saying, another final word we heard as kids about being related to a famous Bushwhacker that I now know as William c
"Bushwhacker Bill" Wilson is this Not everything is as it seems, and two other Bushwhackers were found guilty and hanged to protect a great secret.
And now, in my own research of my ancester relative Bill Wilson, I have discovered that my great relative did Not die that day...But in fact gave his two friends a location where he had hidden a small fortune of gold, money, and other valuables from his Union raids. Shots fired in the air that day. However, the 3 longtime friends were not expecting company so soon. So Bushwhacker Bill took off right away, not telling a Soul where he was going. It was like he disappeared like a spirit. The two convicted murderers considered admitting the hoax. But Bill had saved the life of one during a fiere battle with the Jayhawkers/Redlegs. And so out of true loyalty, they kept quiet and took their secret to the grave...Never finding nor revealing whereabouts of their promised small fortune. And my heroic relative, "Bushwhacker" Bill Wilson, whom my own Dad was named after in his honor, lived a full and happy life. He was never hunted again and went under an assumed Name. That name being Sam Terrial!! Not much info about Bil under his assumed name except that he died of natural causes and lived to be very old!!
Lastly, in the honor 8f this brave Bushwhacker which he was named after, my Dad continued that guerilla-type militia honor and retired from the US Army as a Master Seargent, having served several tours during the Korean War and also countless tours, at least 5 known, in Vietnam as a US Army Speciall Forces Green Beret. Dad was a true hero in every sense of the word, saving the lives of some of his team and many others. Dad died sadly in 2010. He would never discuss Vietnam until just before he died.
a week before he died, I asked Dad why he continued going back to Korea and especially Vietnam and risking his life. Dad replied with One answer I did it to honor my country and to honor the bravest relative we have Ever had in our family Bill Wilson!!! I did it for "Bushwhacker" Bill!!!! Thanks for reading!!!
I spent many childhood days with the author Don Wilson's family in Edgar Springs. I was the same age as Don's younger brother Woody, and have many good memories of our adventures. Imagine my delight to run into this book today! There were picture of people and places I recognized. So cool!

Have done a lot of research on the Hudgens family. Great book to understand the history of family,
interesting due to relationship to Bushwhacker Bill Wilson. Would like to have copies for grandkids and future generations of this writing and the others that cannot be located.
