Hodge is so good at putting you in the same world as his characters, I often found myself wondering if he'd ever served in a war, lived in Sweden, or been pregnant. There is something far too real about the black, uneasy places he visits. In the opening paragraph, a soldier talks about a question he's often asked: "What's the worst you've ever seen?" His answer? "You don't want to know." But somehow, though the possibility of hearing more really scares me, I read this and find myself wanting to know! I can't praise this man enough. Every phrase is a symphony. Every single one. Another rock solid read. Keep them coming.
Brian Hodge delivers a superb collection of dark fiction shorts. Every single one of these eclectic and haunting stories cuts straight to the core of the darker side of human nature. Hodge's writing style is crisp and clean. His horror is subtle, so don't expect explosions of gore. His stories have depth and weight. This was not a quick or easy read for me and I am glad that it was not. You should take your time with this one and savior each tale. Highly recommended!
I've been a Hodge fan for a lot of years, and I have particularly enjoyed his short story collections. When I found out that CD was releasing a new collection, I was beside myself with joy. And when the wait was finally over and I had the book in my hands...I was not disappointed. Hodge crafts tales that are thought-provoking and intelligent, while also disturbing and unforgettable. He understands short fiction, how to create characters and pace them so that they feel like fully realized and complete tales, a novel's worth of story in a short. Thumbs up here!
